You're Trying My Patience

"You're trying my patience". Is that really a true statement? Consider James 1:3-4

"Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."

Sometimes God calls us into a situation where we have to wait. Who likes to wait? We have to wait for things (at the stop light, grocery store line, at the DMV, at the restaurant, our birthday, Christmas, the possible promotion, the last day of school, etc.) This is where I constantly find myself and it is a struggle. Waiting and patience doesn't come naturally. It only comes supernaturally. We are bombarded in a world with McDonalds, highspeed wireless Internet, smart phones, Minute Rice, microwaves, and instant credit. We are conditioned to not wait. When we have to wait, it rubs us the wrong way. Why do we have to wait? God has many reasons for causing His children (those who have received Jesus as their Savior) to wait. There may be one reason, or there may be many reasons. Only God knows why. Here are a few reasons why He calls us to wait:

1. To learn that we need to dependant on Him...not ourselves, other, circumstances, etc.

"Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day." (Psalm 25:5)

"Wait on the LORD...wait, I say, on the LORD." (Psalm 27:14)

"Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us." (Psalm 123:2)

"My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him." (Psalm 62:5)

2. To have our heart strengthened. Our hearts are prone to weaken and we can easily "lose heart".

"Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD." (Psalm 27:14)

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31)

3. To be able to recognize God's working in our lives and recognize and appreciate His mercy.

"Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us." (Psalm 123:2)

4. To learn that we are treat others right.

"Say not thou, I will recompense [repay] evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee." (Proverbs 20:22)

5. To learn patience.

"Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." (James 1:3-4)

You see, the statement "you're trying my patience" is not true. It's our faith that is "tried" (tested). God allows this to happen/causes it to happen to strengthen our faith. Faith that is made stronger brings about patience. That's what James was saying.

So the next time I/you have to wait for anything, we need to realize that God has His reasons. He loves us too much to hurt us. God wants to help us and not hurt us!

Prayer:

"Dear God, I know that You will call me to wait on You. Please help me to wait patiently for You and recognize Your love, goodness, and grace in those situations. Please help me to be a good example and testimony to others in the midst of my waiting on You ONLY. In Jesus' Name, Amen."

I never knew what animals sacrifice or how they worship. Now I know!

I am amazed how God can take bad things and turn them around for good. Consider the death of Stephen:

And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. (Acts 8:1-5 KJV)

Because of Stephen's death, the believers were thrust out taking the Gospel to others. They didn't allow a bad thing stop them from doing good things. I hope that I can remember this WHILE I endure "bad" things. There really are no "bad" things, just good things from a good God.
